About Professional Development Placements (PDPs)
A placement is a period of time spent for professional development by a teacher in a company or other organisation.
Placements of up to five days are usually managed by Education Business Partnerships (EBPs) in local Learning and Skills Council (LSC) areas.
Placements focus on curriculum and/or management skills development and arrangements for these are funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
Placements are:
- normally between one and five days duration
- flexible, arranged around a duration and time to suit school, teacher and host organisation. One day placements can take place as two half-days, at weekends, or during school holidays.
- planned, structured and focused to achieve the learning objectives and maximise the benefits for everyone.
What do teachers gain from placements?
- hands on preparation for work-related learning and enterprise, now an entitlement for all 14-19 year-olds
- a greater understanding of the world of work and local labour market conditions
- enhanced leadership, management and other skills
- business knowledge and management techniques applicable to school
- subject enrichment
- learning outcomes and experiences that may be used as a contribution towards career progression, as evidence for postgraduate or other qualifications, or for CV enhancement.
